Tenacid-500 Tablet – Tranexamic Acid IP 500 mg by Leeford

Tenacid-500 from Leeford Healthcare is a film-coated tablet of Tranexamic Acid IP 500 mg – the plain, immediate-release strength, and the form in which almost all the clinical evidence for tranexamic acid was generated. It is used for heavy menstrual bleeding, for nosebleeds, for bleeding after dental extraction in people on anticoagulants, and in a range of surgical and trauma settings. The 500 mg tablet is usually taken two or three times a day during bleeding, which is more frequent than the 750 mg sustained release versions but gives the prescriber finer control of the dose – useful where kidney function is reduced and the dose has to be cut. Mechanically it is an antifibrinolytic: it occupies the lysine binding sites on plasminogen so that plasmin cannot attach to fibrin and dissolve a clot that has already formed. Uses & Benefits

Directions for Use

• Swallow the tablet whole with water
• Dosage as directed by the physician – commonly two or three times a day during bleeding
• With or without food; after food if it upsets your stomach
• Space the doses evenly through the day
• Do not continue past the prescribed number of days

Precautions

• Tell your doctor at once if you have ever had a blood clot in the leg or lung, a stroke or a heart attack. Tranexamic acid slows clot breakdown, so it is not given where a clot has occurred or is likely
• It should not be taken with combined hormonal contraceptives without specialist advice – both raise clotting risk
• Not for people with active intravascular clotting, colour vision defects, or bleeding from the kidney or urinary tract, where a clot could block the outflow
• The dose is reduced in kidney impairment. Tell your doctor about kidney disease, seizures, or a history of subarachnoid haemorrhage
• Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are the usual side effects and settle with food. Report any calf pain or swelling, chest pain, breathlessness, sudden severe headache or a change in vision immediately
• Heavy bleeding needs a diagnosis. This controls the symptom – fibroids, polyps, thyroid problems and clotting disorders still need investigating

• Store in a cool, dry place protected from light
• Keep the tablets in the blister until use
• Keep out of reach of children
