Progynova 1 mg is a sugar-coated tablet containing Estradiol Valerate USP (Micronized) 1.0 mg, marketed in India by Bayer Zydus Pharma and described on the carton as an original research product of Bayer Pharma AG, Germany. It is the long-established originator brand of oral estradiol valerate, and the reference against which the generics are compared. The hormone it delivers is 17-beta estradiol – chemically identical to the oestrogen the ovaries make, as distinct from the conjugated equine oestrogens or synthetic ethinylestradiol used in other products. That distinction matters clinically, because estradiol and ethinylestradiol behave quite differently in the liver and carry different risk profiles; HRT is built on estradiol, not on the contraceptive oestrogen. The tablet is sugar-coated rather than film-coated, and the pack holds 28 tablets – one four-week cycle.

Uses & Benefits

• Relieves hot flushes, night sweats and the other vasomotor symptoms of menopause
• Helps with vaginal dryness, discomfort and urinary symptoms caused by falling oestrogen

Directions for Use

• Swallow one tablet a day with water, at the same time each day, or exactly as your doctor directs
• It may be taken with or without food
• The 28-tablet pack is a four-week course – your doctor will tell you whether to take it continuously or in a cycle
• If you still have a uterus, take the progestogen your doctor has prescribed alongside it, exactly as directed
• If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless the next one is nearly due. Do not double up – a missed dose may cause breakthrough bleeding

Precautions

• If you still have a uterus, oestrogen must not be taken alone. Unopposed oestrogen thickens the womb lining and raises the risk of endometrial cancer – a progestogen is prescribed alongside it for this reason. Never drop the progestogen and continue this on its own
• HRT slightly raises the risk of breast cancer, blood clots in the leg or lung, stroke and gallbladder disease. The size of that risk depends on your age, how long since menopause and how long you take it – your doctor weighs it against the benefit at least once a year
• Not for use if you have or have had breast cancer, an oestrogen-dependent cancer, unexplained vaginal bleeding, active or previous blood clots, severe liver disease, or are pregnant
• Tell your doctor about migraine, high blood pressure, diabetes, gallstones, fibroids, endometriosis, epilepsy, asthma, lupus or a family history of breast cancer or clots
• Report any unexpected vaginal bleeding, a breast lump, calf pain or swelling, sudden breathlessness or chest pain, severe headache, or yellowing of the eyes immediately
• Breast tenderness, nausea, headache, bloating and mood change are common in the first weeks and usually settle. Keep up your breast screening and cervical screening appointments

Storage

• Store below 30°C, as printed on the strip
• Keep the tablets in the blister until use
• Keep out of reach of children
