Peglec Powder – Polyethylene Glycol 3350 and Electrolytes for Gastrointestinal Lavage

Peglec from Tablets (India) Limited is a 137.15 g pack of Polyethylene Glycol 3350 and Electrolytes for Oral Solution USP, made under licence from Roussel Morishita Co. Ltd., Osaka, and used to empty the bowel completely before a colonoscopy, barium study or bowel surgery. It is not a laxative in the ordinary sense, and the electrolytes are the reason. PEG 3350 is a large molecule that the gut cannot absorb; it holds water in the bowel by osmosis and flushes it through. Flushing two litres through the colon that way would normally strip out sodium, potassium and bicarbonate with it – so the powder is pre-balanced with sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium bicarbonate and sodium sulfate at concentrations that leave the body’s own levels essentially untouched. That is what makes a whole-gut washout safe to do at home rather than only on a ward. Pineapple or orange flavour sachets are supplied in the pack.

Key Features

  • 137.15 g pack making 2 litres of solution for complete bowel cleansing
  • Electrolyte-balanced, so a whole-gut washout does not deplete the body’s salts
  • PEG 3350 is not absorbed – it works purely by holding water in the bowel
  • Flavour sachets provided: pineapple or orange
  • From Tablets (India) Limited, under licence from Roussel Morishita Co. Ltd., Osaka

Composition

  • Polyethylene Glycol 3350 USP – 118.0 g
  • Sodium Chloride IP – 2.93 g  |  Potassium Chloride IP – 1.484 g
  • Sodium Bicarbonate IP – 3.370 g  |  Anhydrous Sodium Sulfate BP – 11.360 g
  • Per 137.15 g pack. Dissolved in 2 litres the solution provides sodium 125, chloride 35, potassium 10, bicarbonate 20 and sulfate 80 mEq/L

Uses & Benefits

  • Cleans the bowel completely before colonoscopy, barium studies or bowel surgery
  • Electrolyte-balanced, so it does not deplete sodium, potassium or bicarbonate
  • Works by osmosis rather than by irritating the bowel wall
  • The first bowel movement usually comes 1 to 2 hours after starting
  • Flavour sachets are included to make two litres easier to drink
  • The standard adult dose is one whole pack

Directions for Use

  • Empty one pack into 1 litre of clean drinking water and stir well to dissolve, then add another litre to make 2 litres. A flavour sachet from the pack can be mixed in
  • Drink one glass (200 ml) and repeat every 10 to 15 minutes, so that 1000 ml is finished in an hour
  • The first bowel movement usually occurs about 1 to 2 hours after starting
  • Keep drinking until the stool becomes watery, colourless or yellowish, and free of solid matter
  • Use the prepared solution immediately. Do not store it for later use. Ask your doctor about eating and drinking before the dose

Precautions

  • Do not use it if you have a bowel obstruction, perforation, ileus, toxic colitis or megacolon, or if the doctor suspects any of these
  • Stop and contact your doctor if you get severe abdominal pain, distension or vomiting during preparation
  • Tell your doctor about heart failure, kidney disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or if you are elderly or frail – the fluid and salt load matters
  • Do not use it in someone with impaired consciousness or swallowing difficulty because of the risk of inhaling the fluid
  • Nausea, fullness, bloating and cramping are common; drinking each glass quickly rather than sipping helps
  • Tell your doctor about every other medicine – anything taken within about an hour of the washout may be flushed through unabsorbed

Storage

  • Store protected from light and moisture at a temperature not exceeding 30°C, as printed on the pack
  • Use the prepared solution immediately; do not store it
  • Keep out of reach of children
