Ondem 8 mg Tablet from Alkem Laboratories contains Ondansetron 8 mg, the higher strength of this selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonist. It is used where nausea is expected to be severe – notably with highly emetogenic chemotherapy regimens – and works by blocking the serotonin signal that damaged gut cells send to the brain’s vomiting centre. Non-sedating, and free of the movement side effects that limit older anti-emetics. Strip of 10 tablets. Prescription medicine.

Directions for Use

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor
• Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not chew, crush or break it
• May be taken with or without food
• For chemotherapy, take the dose before treatment begins as directed – prevention works far better than rescue
• Complete the course your doctor sets, even on days you feel well

Precautions

• Ondansetron can affect heart rhythm (QT prolongation). Tell your doctor about any heart rhythm disorder, heart failure, or low potassium or magnesium, and about other medicines that affect rhythm
• Constipation and headache are the commonest side effects – 5-HT3 blockers slow the bowel. Keep fluids up
• Not for use in intestinal obstruction, and it does not treat motion sickness – ondansetron works on the chemical trigger, not the inner ear
• Use with caution in liver disease; the dose is usually capped
• Discuss pregnancy with your doctor before use – it is prescribed in pregnancy sickness only when the benefit is judged to outweigh the risk
• Seek urgent care for chest pain, fainting, an irregular heartbeat, or rash and swelling of the face or throat

• Store below 30°C in a dry place
• Keep tablets in the original blister, protected from light and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children
