Olumiant (Baricitinib) Tablet

Olumiant from Eli Lilly contains Baricitinib 4 mg, a selective inhibitor of Janus kinase 1 and 2. JAK enzymes relay the signals of inflammatory cytokines from the cell surface into the nucleus; blocking them interrupts that message and dampens the immune over-activity that drives conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and alopecia areata. Because it suppresses part of the immune system, it is a specialist-initiated medicine that requires screening before you start and blood monitoring throughout. Pack of 7 film-coated tablets.

Important Safety Warning

  • Serious infections. Baricitinib raises the risk of serious bacterial, fungal and viral infections, including tuberculosis and herpes zoster (shingles). You must be screened for TB before starting.
  • Blood clots. Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism have been reported. Seek urgent care for leg swelling or pain, chest pain or sudden breathlessness.
  • Heart events and cancer. In older patients with cardiovascular risk factors, JAK inhibitors have been linked to a higher rate of heart attack, stroke, certain cancers and death compared with TNF blockers.
  • Discuss these risks with your rheumatologist before starting and at every review.
