Huminsulin R 40IU/ml Solution for Injection is a prescription short-acting insulin from Eli Lilly, used to control blood sugar in adults and children with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. It contains soluble monocomponent human insulin of recombinant DNA origin, identical to the insulin made by the human pancreas, at a strength of 40 IU per ml. Taken before meals, it helps manage the rise in blood sugar after eating and, together with a healthy diet and regular exercise, lowers the risk of serious diabetes complications such as kidney damage, nerve damage and loss of vision. It is often prescribed alongside an intermediate- or long-acting insulin. Each pack contains one 10 ml vial.

How It Works

Human insulin acts like the body’s natural insulin. It helps glucose move from the blood into muscle and fat cells, where it is used for energy, and it signals the liver to reduce the amount of glucose it releases. Regular insulin usually starts working within about 30 minutes of injection, peaks within a few hours and lasts for several hours, making it well suited to covering mealtime rises in blood sugar.

How to Use

• Inject under the skin 20 to 30 minutes before a meal, exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
• Use only insulin syringes marked for U-40 insulin; other syringes will give the wrong dose.
• Rotate injection sites within the abdomen, thigh or upper arm to avoid skin changes.
• Check your blood sugar regularly and never change your dose without medical advice.

Safety Advice

• This is a Schedule H prescription medicine; use only under medical supervision.
• Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) is the most common side effect; keep glucose or sugar handy for sweating, shaking, dizziness or confusion.
• Do not skip meals after injecting, and limit alcohol, which can lower blood sugar.
• Tell your doctor about kidney or liver problems, pregnancy and all other medicines you take.
• Store unopened vials in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C, protected from sunlight. Do not freeze, and do not use if the solution looks cloudy.
