The HumaPen Ergo II from Eli Lilly is a reusable insulin delivery device in two-tone blue – the pen on its own, with no insulin and no needles included. It is a durable metal-and-plastic pen that takes a 3 ml insulin cartridge, and it is worth being clear about what it is and is not. A reusable pen is not the disposable pre-filled kind you throw away when the insulin runs out; you buy the device once, then replace only the cartridge, which works out considerably cheaper over a year and produces far less plastic waste. The Ergo II doses in 1-unit increments up to 60 units, and its dial can be turned back to correct an overdialled dose without wasting insulin – a genuinely useful feature that many simpler pens lack. Compatibility is strict: the pack states it is for use only with Lilly Huminsulin, Humalog and Eglucent 3 ml cartridges and Becton Dickinson pen needles. Pack contains one pen (device only). Directions for Use

• Read the manufacturer’s instruction manual supplied with the pen before first use, and have a diabetes nurse or pharmacist show you the technique
• Load a compatible Lilly 3 ml cartridge and fit a new BD pen needle for every injection
• Prime (air-shot) 2 units before each injection until a drop appears, to clear air from the needle
• Dial the prescribed dose, inject, and hold the button down for at least 5 seconds before withdrawing
• Remove and discard the needle after every injection – never store the pen with a needle attached

Precautions

• This is the pen only. It contains no insulin. You will also need a compatible Lilly 3 ml cartridge and BD pen needles, both bought separately
• Do not use non-compatible cartridges or needles. A cartridge that does not fit properly can cause an inaccurate dose, which with insulin means a hypoglycaemic or hyperglycaemic event
• Never share a pen with anyone else, even with a fresh needle – this transmits blood-borne infection
• Do not use a pen that has been dropped, cracked or is not dialling smoothly. Replace it, and check your dose delivery
• Store the pen without a cartridge at room temperature; a cartridge in use follows the insulin’s own storage instructions. Do not refrigerate the pen itself
• Insulin dosing must be set by your doctor. Never change a dose because of what the pen allows, and keep fast-acting glucose to hand

Storage

• Store the pen at room temperature, away from heat, direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze and do not refrigerate the device
• Keep it clean and dry – wipe the outside with a damp cloth; do not soak or wash it
• Keep out of reach of children, and dispose of used needles in a sharps container
