Human Actrapid 40IU/ml Solution for Injection is a prescription short-acting insulin from Novo Nordisk used to treat type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Each ml contains Human Insulin I.P. 40 IU, a monocomponent biosynthetic insulin made by r-DNA technology, supplied in a 10 ml multi-dose vial. It is used to control the rise in blood sugar that follows meals and is usually prescribed together with an intermediate- or long-acting insulin or other diabetes medicines. Used alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise, it helps prevent serious long-term complications of diabetes such as kidney damage, nerve damage and loss of vision. It is manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals under licence from Novo Nordisk India.

How It Works

Human Actrapid is a clear, neutral solution of soluble insulin that is identical to the insulin produced naturally by the pancreas. After injection, it helps muscle and fat cells absorb glucose from the blood and use it for energy, and it signals the liver to stop releasing stored sugar. It begins to act within about 30 minutes, peaks within a few hours and lasts up to around eight hours, covering the blood sugar rise from a meal.

How to Use

• Use exactly as prescribed; your doctor will set the dose based on your blood sugar and meals.
• Inject under the skin 20–30 minutes before a meal, using a syringe marked for 40 IU/ml insulin only.
• Rotate injection sites across the abdomen, thighs, upper arms or buttocks.
• Never share needles or syringes, and monitor your blood sugar regularly.

Safety Advice

• This is a Schedule H prescription medicine; use only under medical supervision.
• Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) is the most common side effect; learn its signs, such as sweating, shaking, hunger and confusion, and carry sugar with you.
• Do not skip meals after injecting, and tell your doctor about all other medicines you take.
• Injection-site reactions, weight gain and swelling may occur; report any allergic reaction immediately.
• Store unopened vials at 2–8°C in a refrigerator; do not freeze. In use, keep below 25°C for up to 4 weeks, protected from light and out of reach of children.
