Desowen Lotion – Desonide 0.05% w/w by Galderma

Desowen Lotion from Galderma is Desonide 0.05% w/w in a 30 ml bottle. Desonide is unusual among topical steroids: it is a non-fluorinated, low-potency corticosteroid, and both halves of that description matter. Removing the fluorine atom that most modern topical steroids carry gives up some raw anti-inflammatory power but also removes much of what makes them thin the skin and cause telangiectasia. The result is a steroid mild enough that dermatologists reach for it in exactly the places where clobetasol and mometasone are avoided – the face, the eyelids, the folds and the skin of young children, where absorption is high and the margin for error is small. The lotion base spreads easily over large or hairy areas and is not greasy, which is why it is used for scalp and body eczema. Mild does not mean unmonitored: it is still a prescription steroid with a four-week ceiling. 30 ml, for external use only.

Key Features

  • Desonide 0.05% w/w in a lotion base, 30 ml bottle
  • A low-potency, non-fluorinated corticosteroid – the gentle end of the ladder
  • Preferred for thin skin: face, eyelids, folds and children, as prescribed
  • Lotion base spreads easily on large or hairy areas without greasiness
  • Shake well before use. From Galderma India Pvt. Ltd.

Composition

  • Desonide – 0.05% w/w
  • Preservatives: Methyl p-hydroxybenzoate IP 0.08% w/w, Propyl p-hydroxybenzoate IP 0.04% w/w
  • In a lotion base. As printed on the carton

Uses & Benefits

  • Treats skin conditions with inflammation and itching, including eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis
  • Reduces redness, rash, soreness and itch caused by the skin reacting to an irritant
  • Mild enough to be prescribed for the face and other delicate areas
  • Reduces the scaly, itchy patches of psoriasis on elbows, knees and scalp
  • A pourable lotion, so it covers a wide area quickly
  • Applied as a thin film two or three times a day, or as your doctor advises

Directions for Use

  • For external use only. Shake the bottle well before each use – the lotion separates on standing
  • Wash and dry the affected area, then apply a thin, even film
  • Avoid contact with the eyes, nose and mouth. Rinse with plenty of water if it gets there by accident
  • Do not cover the treated area with an airtight dressing or bandage unless directed by your doctor
  • Usually two or three times daily, or as prescribed. Do not use it for more than four consecutive weeks at a time

Precautions

  • Do not use it for longer than prescribed. Even a mild steroid can thin the skin, and the face and folds are where that shows first
  • Do not apply it to infected skin – a steroid can let a fungal, bacterial or viral infection spread. Stop and consult your doctor if the treated area becomes infected
  • See your doctor if the condition has not improved after four weeks of treatment
  • Use the smallest amount that works, especially in children, whose skin absorbs more relative to body size
  • Burning, irritation, redness, swelling or rash at the site of application can occur; these are usually temporary
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before using it

Storage

  • Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. Do not freeze, as printed on the carton
  • Keep the lid tightly closed after use
  • Keep out of reach of children
