Atarax 25 mg Tablet – Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride IP 25 mg by Dr Reddy’s

Atarax 25 mg from Dr Reddy’s is a film-coated tablet of Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride IP 25 mg, a first-generation antihistamine used both for stubborn itching and for short-term anxiety. It is the only drug in common use that is genuinely prescribed for both, and the reason is that hydroxyzine crosses into the brain rather than staying in the body, as newer antihistamines do. That crossing is the whole point: centrally it is calming and sedating, so it settles anticipatory anxiety before a procedure and helps the sleep that itching destroys; peripherally it blocks histamine, so it damps the itch of chronic urticaria, eczema and dermatitis. It is also one of the few antihistamines with real anti-itch effect in chronic spontaneous urticaria when a non-sedating drug is not enough. The 25 mg is the standard adult strength, most often taken at night. It causes drowsiness – do not drive on it. 15 tablets.

Key Features

  • Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride IP 25 mg, film-coated tablets
  • A first-generation antihistamine that works both on itch and on short-term anxiety
  • The standard adult strength – usually taken at night because it sedates
  • Colour: Titanium Dioxide IP. Made by Exemed Pharmaceuticals, Vapi
  • Blister of 15 tablets, marketed by Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd.

Composition

  • Hydroxyzine Hydrochloride IP – 25 mg
  • Excipients q.s. Colour: Titanium Dioxide IP. As printed on the blister

Uses & Benefits

  • Relieves itching, swelling and rash in skin allergy, eczema, dermatitis and urticaria
  • Used for short-term anxiety and for calming before or after a procedure
  • Helps sleep that has been broken by night-time itching
  • Effective in chronic urticaria when a non-sedating antihistamine is not enough
  • Works within about half an hour and lasts most of the night
  • A single tablet strength for most adults, taken with or without food

Directions for Use

  • Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not chew, crush or break it
  • It can be taken with or without food
  • Most people are told to take it at night because of the drowsiness. Follow the schedule your doctor sets – the dose differs for itch and for anxiety
  • If you miss a dose, take it when you remember. Never take a double dose
  • Take it for as long as it is prescribed, and ask your doctor before stopping if you are taking it for anxiety

Precautions

  • It causes drowsiness, dizziness and blurred vision. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you
  • Avoid alcohol completely while taking it – together they cause heavy sedation
  • Tell your doctor about any heart problem or heart rhythm disorder. Hydroxyzine can prolong the QT interval, and this matters more at higher doses and in older people
  • It is strongly anticholinergic: expect dry mouth and constipation, and tell your doctor about glaucoma, an enlarged prostate or difficulty passing urine
  • Tell your doctor about high blood pressure, liver or kidney problems, or epilepsy, and about every other medicine you take
  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Storage

  • Store protected from light and moisture, as printed on the blister
  • Keep the tablets in the blister until you take them
  • Keep out of reach of children
