Mixtard 30 FlexPen 100 IU/ml – Premixed Human Insulin for Diabetes Management

Mixtard 30 FlexPen 100 IU/ml is a prescription premixed human insulin used to help control blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus. It contains 30% soluble human insulin, which acts relatively quickly, and 70% isophane human insulin, which provides a longer-lasting effect. Mixtard 30 begins lowering blood glucose approximately 30 minutes after injection, while its overall effect may continue for up to approximately 24 hours. It is supplied in a disposable, pre-filled FlexPen containing 3 ml of insulin suspension. The insulin dose and injection schedule must be determined by a qualified healthcare professional based on blood glucose readings, diet, physical activity, other medicines, and individual insulin requirements.

Key Features

  • Premixed Human Insulin: Combines fast-acting and intermediate-acting human insulin.
  • 30/70 Formulation: Contains 30% soluble insulin and 70% isophane insulin.
  • 100 IU/ml Strength: Each millilitre contains 100 international units of human insulin.
  • Pre-Filled FlexPen: Ready-to-use disposable insulin-injection pen.
  • Adjustable Dose: Delivers 1 to 60 units in increments of one unit.
  • Subcutaneous Administration: Designed for injection beneath the skin.

Active Ingredients

  • Soluble Human Insulin 30%: Provides the faster-acting component of the formulation.
  • Isophane Human Insulin 70%: Provides the longer-acting component for continued blood glucose control.

Uses

  • Management of diabetes mellitus requiring insulin treatment.
  • Blood glucose control in eligible patients with type 1 diabetes.
  • Blood glucose control in eligible patients with type 2 diabetes.
  • Used as part of an individualized diabetes-management plan that includes appropriate diet, activity, and glucose monitoring.

How to Prepare the FlexPen

  • Check the product name, insulin type, concentration, and expiry date before every injection.
  • Allow a new refrigerated pen to reach room temperature before preparing it.
  • Before using a new pen for the first time, move the pen up and down 20 times so the glass ball moves from one end of the cartridge to the other.
  • Before each subsequent injection, move the pen up and down at least 10 times.
  • Continue mixing until the insulin appears uniformly white and cloudy.
  • Do not use the pen if the suspension does not become uniformly white and cloudy.
  • Ensure that at least 12 units remain in the cartridge so the insulin can be mixed correctly.
  • Attach a new compatible NovoFine or NovoTwist disposable needle before every injection.
  • Perform an insulin-flow check according to the FlexPen instructions before selecting the prescribed dose.

How to Use

  • Use Mixtard 30 FlexPen exactly as prescribed by your healthcare professional.
  • Inject it under the skin of the abdomen, thigh, buttock, or upper arm.
  • Rotate injection sites within the selected body area to reduce the risk of skin lumps, thickening, or pitting.
  • Mixtard is generally administered approximately 30 minutes before a meal.
  • Eat a meal or a carbohydrate-containing snack within 30 minutes after the injection.
  • Press the dose button completely and keep the needle under the skin for at least six seconds.
  • Remove and safely discard the needle after every injection.
  • Do not change the dose, insulin type, or injection schedule without medical supervision.

Precautions

  • Do not use Mixtard during an episode of low blood glucose.
  • Check blood glucose regularly according to your diabetes-management plan.
  • Inform your doctor if you have kidney, liver, adrenal, thyroid, or pituitary problems.
  • Changes in meals, physical activity, illness, stress, body weight, or other medicines may alter insulin requirements.
  • Tell your healthcare provider about all diabetes medicines, prescription medicines, supplements, and herbal products you use.
  • Always carry a source of fast-acting sugar as advised by your healthcare provider.
  • Do not share the FlexPen or needles with another person, even when the needle has been changed.
  • Do not use Mixtard in an insulin-infusion pump.
  • Do not inject it directly into a vein or muscle.

Warning

  • Hypoglycaemia: Low blood glucose is the most common adverse effect and may become severe or life-threatening.
  • Symptoms may include sweating, shaking, hunger, dizziness, headache, confusion, blurred vision, weakness, seizures, or unconsciousness.
  • Hyperglycaemia: Missing doses, using insufficient insulin, illness, or device problems may cause dangerously high blood glucose.
  • Allergic Reactions: Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread rash, dizziness, or rapid heartbeat.
  • Using the wrong insulin or selecting an incorrect dose may cause severe blood glucose complications.
  • Do not use the FlexPen if it is damaged, leaking, frozen, or not functioning correctly.

  • Skin thickening, pits, or lumps at repeatedly used injection sites.
