Gemfrac Injection is a prescription bone-building medicine from Alkem Laboratories used to treat severe osteoporosis in men and postmenopausal women who have a high risk of fractures. Each prefilled pen contains Teriparatide 600 mcg in 2.4 ml, a recombinant form of human parathyroid hormone (rhPTH 1-34). Unlike medicines that only slow bone loss, it actively stimulates new bone formation, improving bone density and strength and lowering the risk of spine and other fractures. The ready-to-use pen allows convenient daily injections under the skin at home once you have been shown how by a healthcare professional.

How It Works

Teriparatide mimics the active part of the body’s natural parathyroid hormone. When given once daily, it switches on osteoblasts, the cells that build new bone, more than it activates the cells that break bone down. This leads to new bone being laid down on existing bone surfaces, increasing bone mass and improving the internal structure of the skeleton. Over months of treatment, bones become thicker and more resistant to fractures.

How to Use

• Inject under the skin of the thigh or abdomen once daily, exactly as prescribed.
• Use it at about the same time each day, and change the injection site each time.
• Use a new needle for every injection and never share your pen.
• Treatment is usually limited to a maximum of 2 years; follow your doctor’s advice.

Safety Advice

• This is a prescription medicine; use only under medical supervision.
• Tell your doctor if you have kidney stones, kidney problems, high blood calcium, Paget’s disease or have had radiation therapy to the bones.
• Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or in children and young adults with open growth plates.
• Common side effects include joint pain, nausea, dizziness and injection site redness or swelling. Sit or lie down if you feel lightheaded after injecting.
• Store in a refrigerator at 2-8°C and do not freeze. Once opened, use within 28 days. Keep out of reach of children.
