Diabetrol Tablet from Abbott is a fixed-dose anti-diabetic combination containing Glibenclamide (Glyburide) 5 mg and Metformin Hydrochloride 500 mg in a single tablet. It is prescribed for adults with type 2 diabetes whose blood sugar is no longer controlled by diet, exercise and a single medicine. The two ingredients work on different parts of the problem: glibenclamide is a sulfonylurea that stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin, while metformin is a biguanide that reduces the amount of glucose the liver produces and helps muscle and fat tissue respond better to the insulin already present. Combining them in one tablet keeps the daily pill count down and makes it easier to stay on treatment. Supplied in strips of 10 tablets.

Directions for Use

• Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor – usually one tablet with or just after a meal
• Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew it
• Take it at the same time each day and never skip the meal that follows a dose
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next is due – never double up
• Continue home blood-sugar monitoring and attend follow-up reviews as advised

Precautions

• Prescription-only medicine – take it strictly as directed and never adjust the dose on your own
• Can cause hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar); carry glucose or sugar and learn the warning signs such as sweating, shakiness, hunger and confusion
• Nausea, a metallic taste, loose stools, bloating and reduced appetite are the most common effects and usually settle with time
• Not suitable in significant kidney or liver impairment, severe infection, dehydration or diabetic ketoacidosis because of the risk of lactic acidosis
• Tell your doctor before any surgery or contrast X-ray scan, and avoid alcohol, which increases both hypoglycaemia and lactic acidosis risk
• Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your doctor advises otherwise; keep the strip out of reach of children

Storage

• Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place
• Keep the tablets in the original strip, protected from light and moisture
• Do not use after the printed expiry date and keep away from children
