Melnor Cream

Melnor Cream from Glenmark is a prescription triple-combination cream for the short-term treatment of moderate to severe melasma on the face. It pairs three actives that work on different parts of the problem: hydroquinone slows the enzyme that produces melanin, tretinoin speeds up the turnover of pigmented surface cells so they shed faster, and mometasone furoate – a corticosteroid – damps down the irritation the first two would otherwise cause. Because of the steroid, it is meant for short, supervised courses rather than daily long-term use. 20 g tube.

Key Features

  • Triple-combination formula – the standard modified Kligman regimen for melasma.
  • Hydroquinone 2% reduces melanin production at source.
  • Tretinoin 0.025% accelerates shedding of pigmented surface cells.
  • Mometasone Furoate 0.1% controls the irritation the other two can cause.
  • From Glenmark Pharmaceuticals; 20 g tube.

Composition / Key Ingredients

  • Hydroquinone USP – 2.0% w/w
  • Tretinoin USP – 0.025% w/w
  • Mometasone Furoate IP – 0.1% w/w
  • Cream base – q.s.

Please refer to the pack label for the complete list of ingredients.

Uses & Benefits

  • Short-term, intermittent treatment of moderate to severe facial melasma.
  • Helps lighten dark brown patches on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip.
  • Evens out patchy tone caused by hormonal or sun-driven pigmentation.
  • Reduces the redness and irritation that depigmenting agents alone can cause.
  • Works alongside strict sun protection, not instead of it.
  • Prescribed when milder measures have not controlled the pigmentation.

Directions for Use

  • Apply a thin layer to the affected areas once daily at night, or exactly as your doctor directs.
  • Wash and dry the skin first, then apply about 30 minutes before bed.
  • Use only on the pigmented patches – do not spread it over the whole face.
  • Wash your hands after applying.
  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning throughout the course.

Precautions

  • Schedule H prescription drug. The pack states: “Not to be sold by retail without the prescription of a Registered Medical Practitioner.”
  • Do not use for longer than 6–8 weeks without medical review. Mometasone is a corticosteroid; prolonged facial use can thin the skin, cause visible capillaries and trigger steroid-induced rosacea.
  • Not to be used during pregnancy – tretinoin can harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Avoid sunlight and UV exposure. The pack warns that sun exposure will cause repigmentation of the treated area, undoing the benefit.
  • For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and mucous membranes, and do not apply to broken or infected skin.
  • Expect some dryness, redness, peeling or stinging early on. Stop and consult your doctor if irritation is severe or the pigmentation worsens.

Storage

  • Store at a temperature below 25°C. Do not freeze.
  • Keep the tube tightly closed after use.
  • Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
