Human Mixtard 40IU/ml Suspension for Injection is a prescription premixed insulin from Novo Nordisk used to improve blood sugar control in adults and children with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Each ml contains 40 IU of biosynthetic human insulin, made up of 30% fast-acting soluble insulin and 70% intermediate-acting isophane insulin. This biphasic mix covers the rise in blood sugar after a meal and also provides background insulin for several hours afterwards. Each 10 ml vial holds 400 units and is drawn up with a matching U-40 insulin syringe. It is manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals under licence from Novo Nordisk and is usually used together with a healthy diet, regular exercise and other diabetes medicines.

How It Works

Insulin is the hormone that lets the body’s cells take in glucose from the blood for energy. The soluble part of Human Mixtard starts working within about 30 minutes to handle the sugar from a meal, while the isophane part is absorbed slowly and keeps working for up to 24 hours. Together they lower blood glucose, reduce sugar release from the liver and help keep levels steady through the day.

How to Use

• Use exactly the dose and timing prescribed by your doctor, usually 30 minutes before a meal.
• Roll the vial gently between your palms until the suspension looks evenly white and cloudy.
• Inject under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm, rotating injection sites.
• Eat a meal containing carbohydrates within 30 minutes of the injection; never inject into a vein.

Safety Advice

• This is a Schedule H prescription medicine; use only under medical supervision.
• Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) is the most common side effect; watch for sweating, shaking, hunger, dizziness or confusion and keep sugar handy.
• Use only U-40 syringes with this 40IU/ml vial; a wrong syringe can cause a serious dosing error.
• Monitor blood glucose regularly and do not change your dose or stop treatment without medical advice.
• Store unopened vials in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C and never freeze. Once in use, keep below 25°C for up to 6 weeks, away from light and out of reach of children.
