Duotrol SR Tablet

Duotrol SR Tablet is a fixed-dose combination medicine used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It combines Glibenclamide, a sulfonylurea that stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin, with Metformin Hydrochloride in a sustained-release (SR) form, which reduces glucose production in the liver and improves the bodys sensitivity to insulin. Together, these two mechanisms work to lower and control blood sugar levels more effectively than either medicine alone.

Duotrol SR is prescribed to patients whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled by metformin or a sulfonylurea alone, or by lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise. By combining two complementary modes of action in a single tablet, it helps patients achieve better glycemic control while reducing the number of tablets that need to be taken during the day. The sustained-release formulation of metformin allows the medicine to be released gradually, providing more even blood levels of the drug over the day and reducing stomach-related side effects that are more common with immediate-release metformin.

Duotrol SR should be taken exactly as directed by the physician, usually once or twice daily with meals, as taking it with food helps reduce stomach upset and helps the body absorb the medicine steadily. The tablet should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed, since crushing an SR tablet disrupts its slow-release action. Dosage is individualised based on blood sugar readings and should never be adjusted without medical advice.

Patients using Duotrol SR should monitor their blood sugar regularly and stay alert for signs of low blood sugar such as sweating, shakiness, dizziness or confusion, particularly if a meal is delayed or skipped, or if alcohol is consumed. It should be used with caution in people with kidney or liver impairment, and metformin-containing medicines are usually stopped temporarily before surgery or procedures involving contrast dye, as advised by a doctor. This medicine is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless specifically advised. Regular check-ups, including kidney function and vitamin B12 levels, are generally recommended for patients on long-term metformin therapy.

Duotrol SR is manufactured by USV Private Limited and is available as a strip of 10 sustained-release tablets. Store the tablets in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and keep out of reach of children.
