Nizonide 500 Tablet from Lupin’s Endeavour division contains Nitazoxanide 500 mg, a broad-spectrum antiparasitic and antiprotozoal medicine. It is prescribed for infectious diarrhoea caused by protozoa such as Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum, and is also used against several intestinal worms and certain diarrhoea-causing bacteria. Nitazoxanide interferes with an enzyme pathway that these organisms depend on for energy, so they can no longer survive in the gut. Because it works on a wide range of organisms, it is often chosen when the exact cause of a stubborn diarrhoeal illness has not been pinned down. Supplied as a strip of 6 tablets.

Directions for Use

• Take as prescribed – the usual adult course is one tablet every 12 hours for 3 days
• Always take it with food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset
• Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew
• Complete the full course even if the diarrhoea settles after a day or two
• Keep up oral rehydration fluids throughout the illness

Precautions

• Prescription-only medicine – use only on a doctor’s advice and for the stated duration
• Stomach pain, nausea, headache and a yellow-green tinge to the urine are the usual, harmless effects
• Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, as the dose may need review
• Not recommended for children under 12 years unless a doctor prescribes a suitable strength
• Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless clearly advised by your doctor
• Stop and seek medical help if you develop a rash, swelling or difficulty breathing

Storage

• Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place
• Keep the tablets in the original strip, away from light and moisture
• Keep out of the reach of children and do not use past the expiry date
