Diabetrol SR Tablet from Abbott brings together Glibenclamide 5 mg and Metformin Hydrochloride 500 mg in a sustained-release format. The SR matrix releases metformin gradually through the day rather than all at once, which smooths out the glucose-lowering effect and is often better tolerated by people who get nausea or loose stools on immediate-release metformin. The glibenclamide component acts on the pancreas to increase insulin secretion. Together they address both sides of type 2 diabetes – too little insulin and too much resistance to it – from a single once-daily tablet taken with food. Supplied in strips of 10 tablets.

Directions for Use

• Swallow the SR tablet whole – crushing or chewing destroys the sustained-release action
• Take it with food and at roughly the same time each day
• Skip a forgotten dose if the next one is near; never take two together
• Keep up regular blood sugar checks and periodic kidney function tests

Precautions

• Prescription-only medicine – take it strictly as directed and never adjust the dose on your own
• Can cause hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar); carry glucose or sugar and learn the warning signs such as sweating, shakiness, hunger and confusion
• Nausea, a metallic taste, loose stools, bloating and reduced appetite are the most common effects and usually settle with time
• Not suitable in significant kidney or liver impairment, severe infection, dehydration or diabetic ketoacidosis because of the risk of lactic acidosis
• Tell your doctor before any surgery or contrast X-ray scan, and avoid alcohol, which increases both hypoglycaemia and lactic acidosis risk
• Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your doctor advises otherwise; keep the strip out of reach of children

Storage

• Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place
• Keep the tablets in the original strip, protected from light and moisture
• Do not use after the printed expiry date and keep away from children
