Ketasma Tablet – Ketotifen Fumarate Tablets IP 1 mg by Sun Pharma

Ketasma from Sun Pharmaceutical Industries is Ketotifen Fumarate Tablets IP, equivalent to Ketotifen 1 mg. Ketotifen occupies an unusual place among anti-allergy drugs because it does two separate jobs in one molecule. Like a conventional antihistamine, it blocks the H1 receptor and relieves sneezing, itching and watery eyes. But it is also a mast-cell stabiliser – it makes the mast cells that release histamine and other allergy mediators less likely to degranulate in the first place, rather than just mopping up the histamine after release. That second action is why it is used as a preventive add-on in asthma: taken regularly, it reduces how often attacks happen, even though it does nothing to open the airways during an attack in progress. Colour: Brilliant Blue FCF. Strip of 10 tablets.

Key Features

  • Ketotifen Fumarate IP equivalent to Ketotifen 1 mg, uncoated tablets
  • Works two ways: antihistamine plus mast-cell stabiliser
  • Used as a preventive add-on in asthma, not as a rescue medicine
  • Colour: Brilliant Blue FCF. Made in a WHO-GMP facility
  • Strip of 10 tablets from Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.

Composition

  • Ketotifen Fumarate IP – equivalent to Ketotifen 1 mg
  • Excipients q.s. Colour: Brilliant Blue FCF. As printed on the carton

Uses & Benefits

  • Used to prevent asthma attacks, as an add-on to other asthma treatment
  • Relieves allergic symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose and itchy, watery eyes
  • Used in allergic skin conditions with itching
  • Reduces the frequency of attacks with regular use rather than treating a single episode
  • A mast-cell stabiliser and antihistamine combined in one drug
  • Taken twice daily as a tablet

Directions for Use

  • Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or after food to reduce drowsiness and stomach upset
  • Usually one tablet twice a day, or as your doctor prescribes
  • Take it regularly, even when you feel well – its benefit builds up with continued use
  • If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next is nearly due. Never double up
  • Do not stop it abruptly without your doctor’s advice if you have been on it for asthma prevention

Precautions

  • It causes drowsiness, especially in the first one to two weeks. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you
  • Avoid alcohol – it adds to the sedation
  • It is a preventer, not a reliever. Ketotifen is taken regularly to reduce the frequency of attacks; it will not stop an attack already underway. Keep a fast-acting reliever inhaler with you
  • Full effect can take one to two weeks of regular use to appear. Do not judge it after a single dose
  • Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, as ketotifen can lower the seizure threshold at high doses
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Storage

  • Store at room temperature, protected from light and moisture, as printed on the carton
  • Keep the tablets in the strip until use
  • Keep out of reach of children
