Practin Herbal Syrup Tasty Pineapple – Ayurvedic Digestive and Appetiser, 175 ml

Practin Herbal Syrup from Dr Reddy’s is a proprietary Ayurvedic medicine in a pineapple-flavoured 175 ml syrup, and despite sharing the Practin name it is a completely different product from Practin Syrup – there is no cyproheptadine in it and it is not an antihistamine. It is a classical dipana-pachana formulation: a digestive and appetiser. The label lists eleven herbs, and the largest single component is Papitaa (Carica papaya) at 40 mg per 5 ml – papaya, whose papain enzymes break down protein and which is the traditional choice for sluggish digestion. Around it sit the classical carminatives and digestive stimulants: Saunf, Sunthi, Ajwain, Safed Jeera, Pippali, Chitrakamool, Nagarmotha, Kapurkachri, Vidanga and Amla. The pack states its indications in Ayurvedic terms – Agnimandya (impaired digestive fire), Adhmana (flatulence), Dipana (appetiser) and Pachan (digestive). Bottle of 175 ml.

Key Features

  • Proprietary Ayurvedic medicine – a digestive and appetiser, not an antihistamine
  • Contains no cyproheptadine – entirely different from Practin Syrup
  • Eleven herbs led by Papitaa (papaya) 40 mg per 5 ml
  • Indicated for Agnimandya, Adhmana, Dipana and Pachan, as printed on the pack
  • Pineapple flavour. Bottle of 175 ml from Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd.

Composition

  • Each 5 ml contains: Papitaa (Carica papaya) 40 mg, Saunf (Foeniculum vulgare) 20 mg, Vidanga (Embelia ribes) 10 mg, Chitrakamool (Plumbago zeylanica) 10 mg, Safed Jeera (Cuminum cyminum) 10 mg
  • Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) 8 mg, Pippali (Piper longum) 8 mg, Sunthi (Zingiber officinale) 5 mg, Amla (Emblica officinalis) 5 mg, Kapurkachri (Hedychium spicatum) 5 mg, Nagarmotha (Cyperus rotundus) 2 mg
  • Preservatives: Methylparaben IP and Propylparaben IP. Excipients q.s. As printed on the pack

Uses & Benefits

  • Useful in Agnimandya – impaired digestion – as the pack states
  • Helps with Adhmana (flatulence) and bloating
  • Acts as a Dipana (appetiser) and Pachan (digestive)
  • Papaya, ginger, ajwain, cumin and fennel are the classical carminatives for this purpose
  • Pineapple-flavoured, so easier to give than a bitter herbal preparation
  • A herbal option where a sedating antihistamine is not wanted

Directions for Use

  • 10 to 15 ml before or after meals, or as directed by the physician, as printed on the pack
  • Shake well before use
  • Measure with the cup or spoon supplied
  • Take it consistently rather than occasionally to judge the effect
  • Keep the bottle tightly closed after every use

Precautions

  • Do not confuse this with Practin Syrup. They share a brand name but this contains no cyproheptadine and does nothing for allergy
  • It contains methylparaben and propylparaben as preservatives – the “100% herbal” footnote on the pack refers to the actives, not the whole formula
  • Contains Chitrakamool and Pippali, which are heating herbs – they may aggravate acidity, reflux or gastritis in susceptible people
  • Not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding without medical advice. Ask a doctor before giving it to a young child
  • Stop and consult a doctor if it causes burning, abdominal pain or a rash
  • Persistent loss of appetite, weight loss, vomiting or abdominal pain needs a diagnosis, not a digestive tonic

Storage

  • Store in a dry place at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. Protect from direct sunlight. Do not freeze, as printed on the pack
  • Shake well before use and keep the bottle tightly closed after every use
  • Keep out of reach of children
