Seroflo 100 Rotacaps – Salmeterol 50 mcg + Fluticasone 100 mcg by Cipla

Seroflo 100 Rotacaps from Cipla contain Salmeterol 50 mcg and Fluticasone Propionate 100 mcg as an inhalation powder in a capsule, used with a Rotahaler. The three strengths in the Seroflo range – 100, 250 and 500 – differ only in the fluticasone; the salmeterol is 50 mcg in all of them. That is deliberate and clinically important. Salmeterol has a ceiling: more than 50 mcg twice daily gives little extra bronchodilation but more tremor and palpitations, so the bronchodilator dose is fixed and only the steroid is titrated up or down. The 100 is therefore the lowest steroid strength, used for milder persistent asthma, for stepping down once control is established, and often in children. Stepping down to it is a sign the treatment is working – and it should always be a doctor’s decision, not one made because symptoms have settled. Pack of 30 capsules.

Key Features

  • Salmeterol 50 mcg + Fluticasone Propionate 100 mcg per capsule
  • The lowest steroid strength in the Seroflo range – milder asthma and step-down
  • Salmeterol is 50 mcg in every Seroflo strength; only the steroid changes
  • Dry powder inhalation capsules used with a Rotahaler (bought separately)
  • Pack of 30 capsules from Cipla Ltd.

Composition

  • Salmeterol – 50 mcg
  • Fluticasone Propionate – 100 mcg
  • Dry powder for inhalation in a capsule. As printed on the pack

Uses & Benefits

  • Prevents asthma symptoms and reduces the frequency of attacks
  • Used in COPD as prescribed to reduce flare-ups and breathlessness
  • Combines an inhaled steroid with a long-acting bronchodilator in one capsule
  • Salmeterol keeps the airways open for about 12 hours per dose
  • Fluticasone treats the underlying airway inflammation rather than just the symptom
  • Rotacaps let you see the powder, so you can confirm the dose was taken

Directions for Use

  • Rotacaps are for inhalation only and must never be swallowed. They are used with a Rotahaler device, which is bought separately
  • Load one rotacap into the Rotahaler, twist to split the capsule, then breathe in deeply and hold your breath for about 10 seconds
  • Check the capsule is empty afterwards, and repeat the inhalation if any powder remains
  • Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after every dose
  • Usually one rotacap twice a day, or exactly as your doctor prescribes. Take it at the same times each day

Precautions

  • This is not a rescue inhaler. It will not relieve a sudden attack – always carry your fast-acting reliever (salbutamol or levosalbutamol) and use that for breathlessness
  • Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after every dose. Inhaled steroid left in the mouth causes oral thrush and a hoarse voice
  • Never take a long-acting beta agonist such as salmeterol on its own for asthma – it must always be combined with an inhaled steroid, as it is here. LABA monotherapy increases the risk of severe asthma events
  • Do not stop it because you feel well. The inflammation it controls returns silently, and stopping abruptly is a common cause of a bad flare
  • Tell your doctor if you need your reliever more often than usual, or if this stops working as well – that means the asthma is not controlled and the treatment needs review
  • Tell your doctor about tuberculosis, any lung infection, thyroid problems, diabetes, heart rhythm problems, high blood pressure or glaucoma. Long-term high-dose inhaled steroid can affect growth in children, bone density and the eyes

Storage

  • Store below 30°C in a dry place. Keep the container tightly closed – the powder absorbs moisture
  • Do not remove a capsule from the container until you are about to use it
  • Keep out of reach of children
