Brivgard 100 mg Tablet – Brivaracetam 100 mg by Lupin

Brivgard 100 from Lupin contains Brivaracetam 100 mg in a film-coated tablet, used as add-on treatment for partial-onset (focal) seizures in epilepsy. Brivaracetam belongs to a small class that works quite unlike older anti-epileptics: rather than blocking sodium channels or boosting GABA, it binds to synaptic vesicle protein 2A, a protein involved in how nerve endings release their chemical signals. Damping that release makes the runaway firing of a seizure less likely to build. It is a refinement of levetiracetam, binding the same target far more tightly and more selectively. Strip of 10 tablets. Prescription medicine.

Key Features

  • Brivaracetam 100 mg film-coated tablet
  • Binds synaptic vesicle protein 2A – a mechanism distinct from older anti-epileptics
  • Add-on treatment for partial-onset (focal) seizures
  • Can be started at an effective dose without slow titration
  • Strip of 10 tablets from Lupin Ltd.

Composition

  • Brivaracetam – 100 mg per film-coated tablet
  • Colours – Ferric Oxide USP-NF Red, Ferrosoferric Oxide USP-NF and Titanium Dioxide IP

Composition as printed on the pack. Refer to the package insert for the complete list of excipients.

Uses & Benefits

  • Reduces the frequency of partial-onset (focal) seizures
  • Added to existing anti-epileptic treatment when seizures are not controlled
  • Reaches an effective dose quickly, without weeks of slow titration
  • Taken twice daily, with or without food
  • Fewer behavioural side effects than levetiracetam for many patients
  • May be used in adults and adolescents as prescribed

Directions for Use

  • Take exactly as prescribed, usually twice daily at the same times
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water; may be taken with or without food
  • Never stop suddenly. Stopping an anti-epileptic abruptly can trigger seizures – any change must be tapered by your doctor
  • Keep taking it even during long seizure-free spells
  • If a dose is missed take it when you remember, unless the next is nearly due

Precautions

  • Mood and behaviour changes are the effect to watch for – irritability, aggression, anxiety or depression. Tell your doctor or family to report them
  • Report any thoughts of self-harm immediately; anti-epileptic drugs carry a small increased risk
  • Drowsiness, dizziness and fatigue are common, especially early on. Do not drive until you know how it affects you
  • The dose is reduced in liver disease – tell your doctor about any liver problem
  • Alcohol worsens the drowsiness and should be avoided
  • Discuss pregnancy and breastfeeding with your neurologist before use, and never stop the medicine on your own if you become pregnant

Storage

  • Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C, as printed on the pack
  • Keep tablets in the original blister until use
  • Keep out of reach of children
