Selgin 5 mg Tablet – Selegiline Hydrochloride 5 mg by Intas

Selgin from Intas Pharmaceuticals contains Selegiline Hydrochloride IP 5 mg, prescribed in Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s is caused by the loss of dopamine-producing cells, and most treatment aims to replace that dopamine. Selegiline takes the other approach: it protects what is left. It blocks monoamine oxidase type B, the enzyme that breaks dopamine down in the brain, so each remaining molecule stays active longer. Used alone in early disease it can delay the need for levodopa; added to levodopa later, it smooths out the wearing-off between doses and often allows a lower levodopa dose. Strip of 10 tablets. Prescription medicine.

Key Features

  • Selegiline Hydrochloride IP 5 mg tablet
  • MAO-B inhibitor – slows the breakdown of the brain’s own dopamine
  • Used alone in early Parkinson’s or alongside levodopa later
  • Helps smooth out the wearing-off between levodopa doses
  • Strip of 10 tablets from Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Composition

  • Selegiline Hydrochloride IP – 5 mg per tablet

Composition as printed on the pack. Refer to the package insert for the complete list of excipients.

Uses & Benefits

  • Improves tremor, stiffness and slowness in Parkinson’s disease
  • Preserves the brain’s own dopamine rather than replacing it
  • May delay the need to start levodopa in early disease
  • Reduces the wearing-off between levodopa doses
  • Can allow a lower daily levodopa dose
  • Taken as a small once or twice daily tablet

Directions for Use

  • Take exactly as prescribed, usually in the morning or with breakfast and lunch
  • Avoid taking it late in the day – selegiline can cause insomnia
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water
  • Do not stop or change the dose without your neurologist’s advice
  • Report any new involuntary movements after starting, as the levodopa dose may need lowering

Precautions

  • Do not exceed the prescribed dose. At higher doses selegiline loses its selectivity for MAO-B and the dietary and drug precautions of older MAO inhibitors begin to apply
  • Tell your doctor about every other medicine, especially antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclics), tramadol, pethidine and dextromethorphan – combinations can cause a dangerous serotonin reaction
  • Insomnia, dry mouth, nausea and dizziness on standing are the common effects
  • Report sudden daytime sleepiness, hallucinations or confusion, particularly in older patients
  • Impulse control problems have been reported with Parkinson’s medicines – tell your doctor if behaviour changes
  • Tell your doctor about uncontrolled high blood pressure, stomach ulcers or liver disease

Storage

  • Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture
  • Keep tablets in the original blister until use
  • Keep out of reach of children
