Atropine Sulfate 1% Sterile Ophthalmic Ointment (3.5 gm)
Atropine Sulfate 1% is a high-potency ophthalmic anticholinergic agent containing Atropine Sulfate, a powerful competitive antagonist of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. Specifically engineered for the clinical management of inflammatory conditions of the iris and uveal tract, Atropine works by inducing prolonged cycloplegia (paralysis of the ciliary muscle) and mydriasis (dilation of the pupil). This targeted biochemical action relaxes the intraocular muscles, effectively reducing the intense pain and photophobia associated with acute iritis and uveitis. By preventing the formation of posterior synechiae (adhesions), Atropine Ophthalmic Ointment provides a decisive therapeutic response to protect the internal structures of the eye during severe inflammatory episodes.
Key Features
- Paralyzes the ciliary muscle to provide profound relief from ocular spasms and pain.
- Induces significant and long-lasting pupil dilation to prevent intraocular adhesions.
- The viscous ointment base provides a constant release of medication for maximum efficacy.
- Specifically indicated for the clinical treatment of iritis, uveitis, and keratitis.
- Often utilized for accurate refraction in pediatric patients or for thorough retinal examinations.
Key Ingredients
- Atropine Sulfate (1%)
- White Petrolatum
- Mineral Oil
- Anhydrous Lanolin
- Purified Water
Precautions
- Use strictly under the guidance of an ophthalmologist. This is a potent medication with systemic absorption potential.
- Strictly contraindicated in patients with primary glaucoma or a predisposition to narrow-angle glaucoma.
- Use with extreme care in children, as they are more susceptible to systemic atropine toxicity (fever, rapid pulse, dry mouth).
- Will cause significant blurred vision and sensitivity to light (photophobia) for several days; avoid driving or operating machinery.
- Do not touch the tube tip to the eye or any other surface to maintain the sterility of the remaining ointment.
- Discontinue use and contact a doctor if you experience a rapid heartbeat, skin flushing, or confusion.
How to Use
- Wash your hands thoroughly. Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid.
- Squeeze a small ribbon (approximately 1/4 inch) of ointment into the pocket created by the lower eyelid.
- Close the eye gently for 1 to 2 minutes. Roll the eye in all directions to help spread the ointment evenly.
- Typically applied once or twice daily, or as specifically directed by your eye care professional.
- Press gently on the inner corner of the eye (near the nose) for one minute to reduce absorption into the tear duct.
- Wipe the tip of the tube with a clean tissue and replace the cap tightly immediately after use.
