Nepastar Eye Drops
Nepastar Eye Drops (Nepafenac 0.1%) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) specifically formulated for ophthalmic use. It is primarily prescribed to prevent and treat pain and inflammation associated with cataract surgery. Nepastar is a “prodrug,” meaning it is converted into its active form (Amfenac) once it penetrates the ocular tissues. This unique characteristic allows it to effectively target the anterior segment of the eye, reducing the production of prostaglandins that cause swelling, redness, and discomfort. By controlling inflammation post-operatively, Nepastar promotes faster recovery and reduces the risk of complications like macular edema, ensuring a smoother healing process for the patient.
Key Features
- Specifically designed to manage post-surgical pain and irritation following cataract procedures.
- Penetrates the cornea efficiently before converting into an active anti-inflammatory agent.
- Effectively minimizes ocular inflammation and protects against cystoid macular edema (CME).
- Accelerates the healing of the ocular surface and helps restore comfort quickly after surgery.
- Provides powerful anti-inflammatory benefits without the side effects often associated with topical steroids.
Key Ingredients
- Nepafenac (0.1% w/v)
- Benzalkonium Chloride
- Sterile Aqueous Vehicle
Precautions
- Do not wear contact lenses during treatment with Nepastar. The preservative can be absorbed by soft lenses, and the surgical eye usually requires a lens-free healing environment.
- Use with caution in patients with known bleeding tendencies or those using other medications that prolong bleeding time (e.g., blood thinners).
- Topical NSAIDs may slow or delay the healing of the corneal surface. Monitor your eye health closely as directed by your surgeon.
- Inform your doctor if you have a history of hypersensitivity to aspirin or other NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen).
- Do not touch the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface to prevent serious eye infections.
How to Use
- Always shake the bottle well before each use, as this is a suspension and the active ingredient may settle.
- Typically applied as one drop in the affected eye(s) three times daily, starting one day before surgery and continuing through the first few weeks of recovery.
- Tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid, and instill the drop into the pocket. Close your eye and apply gentle pressure to the tear duct for 1 minute.
- If you are using other eye drops (such as antibiotics), wait at least 5 minutes between different medications.
- Store at room temperature (under 30°C). Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
