Bimatoprost & Timolol Solution (as Maleate) Eye Drops
Bimatoprost & Timolol Solution as Maleate Eye Drops is a potent, dual-action ophthalmic medication specifically formulated for the management of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). This combination therapy is primarily prescribed for patients suffering from open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who have not achieved adequate pressure reduction with monotherapy. Elevated pressure within the eye is a significant risk factor for optic nerve damage, which can lead to irreversible vision loss if left untreated. By combining two distinct pharmacological agents into a single sterile solution, this medication provides a more convenient and effective way to achieve target pressure levels, significantly reducing the daily burden of multiple eye drop applications.
Key Features
- Combines two different classes of medication to maximize the reduction of intraocular pressure.
- Simultaneously decreases the production of eye fluid and increases its drainage.
- Reduces the number of drops required daily, improving patient adherence and comfort.
- Helps prevent the progression of glaucoma-related vision loss by maintaining stable, low ocular pressure.
- Typically provides sustained pressure control with just a once-daily application.
Key Ingredients
- Bimatoprost
- Timolol Maleate
- Benzalkonium Chloride
- Sodium Phosphate & Sodium Chloride
Precautions
- Inform your ophthalmologist if you have a history of asthma, severe COPD, or heart conditions (like bradycardia or heart block), as Timolol can be absorbed systemically.
- Bimatoprost may cause a gradual change in eye color (increasing brown pigment) and darkening of the eyelid skin, which may be permanent.
- Be aware that this medication may cause increased length and thickness of the eyelashes in the treated eye.
- Remove contact lenses before application. The preservative (Benzalkonium Chloride) can be absorbed by soft lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.
- Do not let the tip of the dropper touch your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
How to Use
- The standard dosage is one drop into the affected eye(s) once daily, ideally in the morning or as directed by your physician.
- To apply, tilt your head back, pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and squeeze one drop into the eye.
- After applying, close your eye and press gently on the inner corner of the eye (near the nose) for 1 to 2 minutes.
- This technique, called punctal occlusion, prevents the medication from draining into the tear duct and being absorbed into the bloodstream.
- If you are using other eye drops, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between different medications.
- Consistency is vital. Do not stop using these drops without consulting your doctor, as your eye pressure may rise rapidly.
