Lotel Eye Ointment
Lotel Eye Ointment is a potent ophthalmic corticosteroid formulation containing Loteprednol Etabonate (0.5%). Developed for the management of ocular inflammation and pain, this sterile ointment is primarily used as a post-operative treatment following eye surgeries such as cataract removal or LASIK. Unlike standard eye drops, the ointment base provides a longer contact time with the ocular surface, making it particularly effective for overnight use or for patients who require sustained therapeutic levels of the medication. It works by inhibiting the inflammatory response to various inciting agents, effectively reducing the redness, swelling, and soreness that often follow surgical procedures or severe allergic reactions.
Key Features
- Uses Loteprednol Etabonate, a “soft steroid” that balances powerful anti-inflammatory action with a lower risk of side effects.
- Specifically indicated to reduce pain and inflammation following ocular surgeries, aiding in a smoother healing process.
- The ointment formulation ensures the active ingredient stays in contact with the eye for an extended duration compared to drops.
- Rapidly alleviates the symptoms of steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the conjunctiva and cornea.
- Designed to break down quickly into inactive forms, protecting the eye from long-term steroid accumulation.
Key Ingredients
- Loteprednol Etabonate (0.5% w/w)
- Sterile Ointment Base
- Preservative (Optional/Varies)
Precautions
- This is a prescription-only medication. Use it strictly for the duration prescribed by your ophthalmologist.
- Prolonged use of steroids can increase pressure inside the eye. If used for more than 10 days, your doctor must monitor your intraocular pressure.
- Steroids can mask or worsen fungal or viral infections (such as Herpes Simplex). Do not use if you have an untreated eye infection.
- Do not wear contact lenses while using this ointment unless specifically cleared by your doctor. Wait at least 15 minutes if reinserting lenses after use.
- The ointment will cause temporary blurring of vision immediately after application. Avoid driving until your vision is completely clear.
- Never touch the tip of the tube to your eye, eyelid, or any other surface to prevent bacterial contamination.
How to Use
- Wash your hands thoroughly before application.
- Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
- Hold the tube upside down near the eye and squeeze a thin ribbon (about 1/2 inch) of ointment into the pocket.
- Look downward and gently close your eye for 1 to 2 minutes to allow the medication to spread. Blink several times to ensure even distribution.
- Wipe away any excess ointment from your eyelashes with a clean tissue.
- If you are using other eye drops, apply them at least 10 minutes before the ointment to ensure proper absorption of both medications.
