Aziderm 20% Cream (Azelaic Acid 20% w/w)

Aziderm 20% Cream is a high-concentration topical treatment containing Azelaic Acid, a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid. At the 20% strength, it is clinically recognized as a first-line therapy for melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, often providing results comparable to hydroquinone but with a better safety profile for long-term use. It works by inhibiting the enzyme tyrosinase, thereby reducing the production of abnormal melanin. Additionally, its potent antibacterial and comedolytic properties make it highly effective for treating inflammatory acne and rosacea. The cream base is specifically formulated to provide a more emollient and hydrating delivery system than the gel version, making it ideal for patients with normal to dry skin types.

Key Features

  • The 20% concentration is the most potent standard dose for clearing dark spots and hormonal melasma.
  • Effectively targets P. acnes bacteria and prevents the buildup of keratin that plugs pores.
  • Specifically targets hyperactive melanocytes (pigment cells) without affecting areas of normally pigmented skin.
  • Calms the vascular activity that causes facial flushing and reduces the papules and pustules associated with rosacea.
  • Because it is not an antibiotic, it can be used for long-term acne maintenance without the risk of bacterial resistance.

Key Ingredients

  • Azelaic Acid (20% w/w)

Precautions

  • A temporary itching, stinging, or tingling sensation is very common during the first few weeks of application.
  • Although less photosensitizing than retinoids, the skin-renewing effects of Aziderm require daily broad-spectrum SPF to protect new skin cells.
  • Applying 20% Azelaic Acid to damp skin significantly increases the risk of irritation. Ensure the skin is bone-dry before use.
  • Do not apply near the eyes, nostrils, or lips. If the cream enters these areas, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Azelaic acid is generally rated as Category B for pregnancy, making it one of the preferred options for “pregnancy mask” (melasma), but consult your doctor first.

How to Use

  • Wash the area with a mild, soap-free cleanser and pat dry. **Wait 15 minutes** to ensure the skin is completely dry.
  • Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected areas twice daily (morning and evening) or as directed by your physician.
  • In the morning, apply Aziderm first, allow it to dry, then follow with moisturizer and sunscreen.
  • While some improvement in acne may be seen in 4 weeks, pigment correction usually requires 3 to 6 months of consistent use.
  • If the 20% strength is too irritating at first, reduce usage to once daily (at night) until the skin adapts.

Legal Disclaimer: Aziderm 20% is a prescription-strength medicated cream. It is significantly more potent than over-the-counter versions. If severe skin peeling or an allergic reaction occurs, seek medical advice immediately.
