Each disposable pen holds 3 mL, which equals 300 units of insulin. Insulin glargine releases slowly from the injection site over about 24 hours. This gives a steady background level of insulin without a sharp peak. It is used to improve blood sugar control in adults and children with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. It is usually injected once a day at the same time. The prefilled pen needs no cartridge loading, which makes daily use simple. The insulin is made by Biocon Biologics using rDNA technology.
