NexPRO Fast 40 from Torrent Pharmaceuticals is Esomeprazole 40 mg with sodium bicarbonate as buffer – and the buffer is what separates it from every ordinary esomeprazole tablet on the shelf, including Torrent’s own NexPRO 40. Standard PPI tablets are enteric-coated because the drug is destroyed by stomach acid; that coating has to dissolve further down the gut, which costs about an hour before absorption even begins. This formulation takes the opposite route: the sodium bicarbonate neutralises stomach acid on the spot, so an uncoated tablet can be absorbed immediately. The practical result is a much faster onset – useful for night-time acid breakthrough and for someone who needs relief tonight rather than tomorrow. Because there is no coating to protect, it can be taken without the strict pre-meal timing of a normal PPI. Note the sodium content if you are on a salt-restricted diet. Strip of 10 tablets.

Directions for Use

• Swallow the tablet whole with water
• Unlike an enteric-coated PPI, it does not depend on strict pre-meal timing – follow the schedule your doctor sets
• Take it at the same time each day and finish the prescribed course
• If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next is nearly due. Never double up
• Avoid or limit alcohol, smoking and trigger foods while you are being treated

Precautions

• This tablet contains sodium bicarbonate. Tell your doctor if you are on a salt-restricted diet, or have heart failure, high blood pressure or kidney disease
• Long-term use is not harmless – low magnesium, low vitamin B12, reduced calcium absorption, higher fracture risk and gut infections are all associated with prolonged acid suppression
• Do not stop a long course abruptly; acid can rebound above where it started
• Tell your doctor about difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools or unintended weight loss – acid suppression can mask a serious problem
• The bicarbonate can affect how other medicines are absorbed. Tell your doctor about everything else you take
• Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, low magnesium, or are pregnant or breastfeeding

• Store in a dry place below 25°C, protected from light, as printed on the carton
• Keep the tablets in the strip until use
