Floricot Tablet – Fludrocortisone Acetate IP 100 mcg by Samarth

Floricot from Samarth Life Sciences is an uncoated tablet of Fludrocortisone Acetate IP 100 mcg. It sits apart from the other corticosteroids because of what it is chosen for. Most steroids – prednisolone, dexamethasone, hydrocortisone – are prescribed for their glucocorticoid effect, meaning suppression of inflammation and immunity. Fludrocortisone is prescribed for its mineralocorticoid effect: it acts on the kidney to make it hold on to sodium and water and excrete potassium, which raises blood volume and blood pressure. That makes it the standard replacement for aldosterone in Addison’s disease and other primary adrenal insufficiency, where it is given alongside hydrocortisone, and it is also used for severe orthostatic hypotension and salt-losing congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The doses are correspondingly tiny – 100 mcg is a tenth of a milligram – and monitoring is about sodium, potassium and blood pressure rather than the usual steroid concerns. Strip of 10 tablets.

Directions for Use

• Take it exactly as your endocrinologist prescribes, usually once daily in the morning
• Swallow with water, with or after food
• Never stop it or skip doses on your own. In adrenal insufficiency, missing replacement therapy can precipitate an adrenal crisis
• Ask your doctor about sick-day rules – doses of replacement steroid usually need increasing during illness, vomiting, injury or surgery
• Keep your blood pressure, sodium and potassium checks as scheduled

Precautions

• If you have adrenal insufficiency, carry a steroid emergency card and tell every doctor and dentist who treats you. An adrenal crisis is a medical emergency – vomiting, severe weakness, confusion and collapse need immediate treatment
• This drug causes sodium and water retention and potassium loss. Report ankle swelling, sudden weight gain, breathlessness, muscle weakness, cramps or palpitations
• Blood pressure, sodium and potassium must be monitored. Tell your doctor about heart failure, high blood pressure or kidney disease
• Interacts with diuretics, digoxin, insulin, blood thinners, NSAIDs and drugs that lower potassium. Give your doctor the full list
• Like other steroids it can mask infection, raise blood sugar and, at higher doses, thin bone. Avoid live vaccines
• Do not use it as a general anti-inflammatory steroid – that is not what it is for

Storage

• Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. Protect from light and moisture, as printed on the strip
• Keep the tablets in the blister until use
• Keep out of reach of children
