Azopt Ophthalmic Suspension

Azopt Ophthalmic Suspension (Brinzolamide 1%) is a specialized anti-glaucoma medication used to lower high pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure). It belongs to a class of drugs known as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. By inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase in the ciliary body of the eye, Azopt reduces the production of aqueous humor (the fluid within the eye). This decrease in fluid production effectively lowers eye pressure, which is critical for preventing optic nerve damage and vision loss in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. As a suspension, it is designed to provide sustained contact with the ocular surface for optimal therapeutic effect.

Key Features

  • Specifically targets the production of intraocular fluid to manage glaucoma effectively.
  • By maintaining healthy eye pressure, it helps prevent the progression of glaucoma-related vision loss.
  • Uses Brinzolamide to selectively block carbonic anhydrase, a key driver of ocular fluid secretion.
  • Formulated as a pH-balanced suspension to minimize the stinging or burning sensation often associated with eye drops.
  • A well-established treatment option for long-term management of ocular hypertension.

Key Ingredients

  • Brinzolamide (1% w/v)
  • Benzalkonium Chloride
  • Tyloxapol & Carbomer 974P

Precautions

  • Brinzolamide is a sulfonamide. If you have a history of serious allergies to “sulfa” drugs, consult your doctor as similar reactions can occur.
  • Remove contact lenses before application. The preservative (Benzalkonium Chloride) can be absorbed by soft lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  • Always shake the bottle thoroughly before each use to ensure the medication is evenly distributed in the suspension.
  • Your vision may become temporarily blurred immediately after using the drops. Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision is clear.
  • Use with caution if you have severe kidney or liver impairment; inform your ophthalmologist of your full medical history.

How to Use

  • The standard dose is typically one drop in the affected eye(s) three times daily, or as strictly directed by your eye specialist.
  • Tilt your head back, pull down the lower lid, and instill the drop. Close your eye and apply gentle pressure to the inner corner (tear duct) for 1–2 minutes.
  • Do not let the dropper tip touch your eye, fingers, or any other surface to prevent infection.
  • If you use other eye medications, wait at least 10 minutes between applying Azopt and the other products.
  • Store the bottle upright at room temperature (between 4°C and 30°C). Do not freeze.
