Penidure LA 12 Injection is a long acting antibiotic marketed by Pfizer. Each single dose vial contains Benzathine Penicillin G 1200000IU as a dry powder. The powder is mixed with sterile water just before use to form a suspension. It is then given as a deep injection into a large muscle. From there the medicine is released slowly over many days. This gives steady antibiotic levels in the blood from just one shot. Penicillin works by stopping bacteria from building their protective cell wall, so they cannot survive. It is mainly active against gram positive bacteria such as streptococcus. Doctors use it for syphilis, strep throat and to prevent rheumatic fever from coming back. It must be given only by a trained healthcare professional and never to people allergic to penicillin.
